Arab plan views Security Council as peace talks sponsor
Yoav Stern
The Arab League will meet September 23 to discuss a proposal to renew the regional peace process with Israel.
“Our hope is that everyone will see the subject from a new perspective, that of seeing the importance to the region of a solution to the problem,” Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said yesterday.
The proposal is being led by moderate Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and is based on letting the UN Security Council be the sponsor of peace talks.
Al-Faisal noted that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has told UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that progress in the peace process would have a positive influence on all the regional problems facing the United Nations.
